"As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?" -Psalm 42:1-2
Our human, broken souls cry out for intimacy. We were created this way. We were created from God into a world that separated us, in many ways, from God. So, in our very nature is a desire to be reconnected with God and with people. That is why being lonely is such a horrible feeling because you become acutely aware of your separation from people. And, ultimately, you become acutely aware that you're separated from God.
As a pastor, I've built relationships with people that I thought had lives that were near perfect and then they would pour out their souls to me, and I'd be reminded that all of us are broken. All of us.
However, God sees what we could be, he knows what we should be, but he loves us just as we are. And until we understand this, just about everything else we come to know about God doesn't even matter. All holiness, all righteous living, all goodness can only naturally come from a place of intimacy and understanding God's unending, perfect, meritless love for his kids. I'm so happy about that. Are you?
Prayer: Dear Lord, thank you that I'm broken. Being broken gives me a reason and yearning to depend on you as I become all that you designed me to be, to be embraced by your perfect love just as I am. Amen.
Reflection: Are you happy about God's unending love in your life? |
