Busy lives...lonely hearts...

By Pastor Bobby Schuller

"The Lord is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves such as have a contrite spirit."
-Psalm 24:18

It's never been like this in the world before. We have so many more ways to communicate with the people that we love in our lives. We have Facebook...to share comments and see what people are doing through their pictures and videos. Right now, most of us have inboxes filled with e-mails and cell phones filled with voicemails. We have text messages to answer and phone calls to make. And yet, in this age that we live, where incredible communication technology is available, people are lonely. People are seriously lonely.

Something strange has happened. We thought that this technology, all these great things that we've been given, would solve this issue of loneliness. We have more time; we have a greater ability to talk to anyone at any time. Yet, too many of us, who find ourselves e-mailing, Skypeing, texting, and Facebooking, are lonely, lonely, lonely. We find ourselves - sometimes even in the presence of the people that we love - very lonely.

This is a horrible feeling, sitting at a party, or having coffee with someone, or having interesting conversations with favorite people, and still we are lonely. It's worse than being busy and not productive. It's a sense that, despite having all these people around, there's still a feeling of loneliness.

Then, what happens from this deep sense of loneliness? We start to make some bad choices.

So, please hear these comforting words: You can't be alone. You can never, ever be alone. God is with us all the time. There's nothing we can do - no matter where we are, whether in the deepest desert or at the bottom of a dungeon - to be completely alone; God is always there with us.

That is where spiritual growth begins, with God deep down in the core, in our guts, deep down inside. When we have that hole filled with God's love, it's from that place that we will make better choices, have fun, and live full, productive, positive lives.

Prayer: Dear Lord, with you in my life, I am never alone. When my loneliness disappears, I make better choices about my life and how I spend my time. I am yours, Lord. Fill me with your love. Amen.

Reflection: When you feel lonely, how do you spend your time? When you feel God's love inside, how do your choices change?
