Dirty Dishes

By Pastor Bobby Schuller

"Carry each other's burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ."
-Galatians 6:2

When I was about fifteen years old, I had a dream. I was walking through a hall, holding a filthy tray filled with dirty dishes. Finally, I see the youth group worship leader from the church in Tulsa, OK, where I was living at the time. Behind him was a mountain of dirty dishes hundreds of feet high.

At a sink, happily scrubbing a plate, he looks at me and says, "Bobby, so great to see you. Let me take those dishes from you."

I look at his huge mountain, then I look at my single tray, and I say, "No! I won't let you wash these. You have enough to do."

"Believe it or not," he says, "I can handle one more tray. I'll wash those dishes for you." And he did.

I got involved with this youth group where I brought my dirty stuff, my baggage, my woundedness, and my doubts. Over time, this church transformed my life because it was comprised of a group of people who had already been there. They supported me and loved me unconditionally even when I made all sorts of dumb mistakes. It was a community of agape love.

Prayer: Dear Lord, how blessed I am when others, filled with your love, help me through the tough times of life. Help me to be sensitive to others when they, too, need help and Christian love. Amen.

Reflection: How have others shown God's love to you? How have you shown his love to others?
